Yard Foreman Location: East London Salary: £40,000-£45,000 per annum DOE Industry: Metal Recycling Reference: ASPLIV Our client is a family-run metal recycling business seeking an experienced, calm and confident Yard Foreman to oversee the safe and efficient day to day operation of a busy metal recycling yard. This is a hands on, varied position covering all operational areas of the business. The successful candidate will maintain an overview of the yard, coordinate the movement of vehicles, materials and employees, keep inbound and outbound loads on schedule and provide clear direction to the wider yard team. The role will suit someone who is confident taking responsibility, able to manage changing priorities and comfortable making decisions around safety, productivity and operational efficiency. You will work closely with the company directors and play an important role in maintaining high standards across the yard. Key Responsibilities - Coordinate scheduled inbound and outbound loads, vehicles, drivers, loading areas and yard personnel. - Keep collections, deliveries and container-loading operations running to schedule. - Communicate delays, conflicts and changing priorities promptly. - Control vehicle and pedestrian movements across the site. - Manage the customer and trader drop-off area safely and professionally. - Direct reversing and manoeuvring vehicles where authorised and safe to do so. - Ensure drivers understand and follow the site traffic plan. - Maintain an active overview of all sections of the yard. - Identify and address untidy, congested or potentially unsafe areas. - Allocate housekeeping and operational tasks to yard employees. - Provide clear instructions and follow up to ensure work is completed to the required standard. - Support yard operations directly where additional assistance is required. - Coordinate priorities between the weighbridge, yard operatives, machine operators, drivers and management. - Ensure materials are placed in the correct areas and prepared for processing or dispatch. - Enforce site rules consistently, including PPE and high-visibility clothing requirements. - Challenge unsafe behaviour calmly and confidently. - Stop vehicle movements or other work where there is an immediate safety concern. - Maintain safe separation between vehicles, employees, customers and members of the public. - Deal with drivers, traders and members of the public in a firm but professional manner. - Record and report incidents, near misses, delays and repeated breaches of site rules. - Lead by example in safety, housekeeping, punctuality and professional conduct. This is a great opportunity for someone with previous experience in scrap metal, recycling, manufacturing or a similar hands-on environment, but applications are also welcomed from candidates looking to start or develop their career within the metal recycling industry. The role will suit someone who is practical, reliable and keen to learn, with a proactive approach to their work. Whether you already have experience grading metals or are looking to learn the trade, the key is having the right attitude, taking pride in your work and being willing to develop your knowledge within the yard. Key Responsibilities - Inspect, sort and segregate ferrous and non-ferrous metals. - Identify higher value grades within mixed parcels and general yard material. - Carry out material recovery and upgrading work to maximise value. - Identify different non-ferrous grades, including brass, gunmetal, phosphor bronze and other valuable materials. - Operate a forklift safely when moving materials between different areas of the yard. - Move, organise and prepare material for processing, storage or dispatch. - Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment. - Report unusual, contaminated or potentially hazardous material immediately. - Identify opportunities to improve material recovery and reduce lost value. - Assist other areas of the yard when operational priorities change. - Follow all site traffic, PPE, environmental and health & safety procedures. - Work additional hours when required and agreed, particularly during busy periods or operational overruns. Key Skills & Experience - Previous experience within scrap metal, recycling or another hands-on environment is beneficial but not essential. - An interest in developing knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metal grades. - Willingness to learn how to identify and separate different grades of metal and higher-value materials. - Previous experience with material grading, sorting or recovery is advantageous but full training can be provided. - FLT Counterbalance licence essential. - Reliable attendance and good timekeeping. - Proactive approach with the ability to work independently and use initiative. - Comfortable working outdoors in a physical yard environment. - Strong awareness of health & safety and safe working practices. - Commercial awareness and an understanding of the importance of handling valuable materials carefully. - Flexible approach with a willingness to support the wider yard operation when required. - Positive attitude and willingness to learn and develop within the role. This is an excellent opportunity for a structural or engineering professional looking to utilise their technical expertise in a customer-facing role. The position is heavily focused on providing engineering support, structural calculations, and technical solutions for building envelope systems, while also identifying opportunities to develop existing and new customer relationships. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, architects, contractors, and clients, providing expert technical guidance on composite floor systems, structural roof decking, and façade/building envelope solutions. Although the role has a commercial element, the primary focus is delivering technically compliant and practical engineering solutions. Key Responsibilities Provide technical support and engineering advice on composite floors, structural roof decking, and building envelope systems. Prepare structural estimations, calculations, and technical proposals in response to customer enquiries. Interpret structural drawings, specifications, and project requirements. Carry out manual structural calculations where required. Interpret wind loading regulations and structural design requirements to provide compliant solutions. Liaise with engineers, architects, contractors, and clients throughout the project lifecycle. Support projects from initial enquiry through to completion, ensuring technically accurate and commercially viable solutions. Deliver technical presentations and product demonstrations where required. Assist with identifying new project opportunities and maintaining strong customer relationships. Structural or civil engineering background is essential. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications. Strong understanding of composite floor systems, structural roof decking, façade systems, or building envelope products. Experience carrying out structural calculations and interpreting wind loading requirements. Experience using a structural calculation software is highly desirable. Excellent technical problem-solving skills with the ability to provide practical engineering solutions. Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to customers and project stakeholders. Commercial awareness with the ability to identify project opportunities when engaging with customers. Self-motivated with excellent organisational and project management skills.
