Transport Planner
Subcontract / 3pl Haulage
Hereford
£30,000 - £40,000 (depending on experience)
Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm
A growing and fast-paced logistics operation is seeking a Subcontract Transport Planner to join its team. This role offers the opportunity to manage a wide variety of transport movements across the UK, including vehicles, plant machinery, and occasional abnormal loads.
The Subcontract Transport Planner will be responsible for managing transport jobs from start to finish. This includes sourcing subcontractors, negotiating rates, planning movements, and ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
The Candidate;
- Previous experience in transport planning or logistics coordination
- Sub-contracting planning experience is highly desirable
- Strong communication skills with a professional and positive telephone manner
- Customer-focused approach with the ability to build relationships
- Commercial awareness and confidence negotiating rates
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a busy environment
- Knowledge of plant machinery or abnormal loads would be advantageous but is not essential
- ICT literate
- A good geographic knowledge
- Have a basic understanding of Large Goods Vehicles (weights, dimensions and terminology)
- A proactive approach to continual professional development
- An excellent team player, able to work on own initiative and make decisions
- A positive attitude towards customer service and continuous improvement
- Ability to question, challenge and improve upon existing processes
Duties and Responsibilities;
- Plan and coordinate transport using subcontractors and third-party logistics providers
- Source the most cost-effective and reliable transport solutions
- Manage jobs from initial booking through to successful delivery
- Build and maintain strong relationships with subcontractors and operational sites
- Coordinate a range of loads including cars, vans, HGVs, plant machinery, and palletised goods
- Ensure excellent customer service through clear communication and proactive updates
- Utilise internal systems, including new routing software currently being developed
- Keep all customers informed of all failed services or significant delays
- Monitoring customer requests, allocating jobs and issuing instructions
- Troubleshooting critical transport related issues as they arise in a live environment
