Container Operations

£28,000 – £35,000
Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm
I’m currently recruiting for an experienced Transport Planner to join a logistics business specialising in container transport operations. This role will focus on planning and coordinating container movements to and from UK ports, ensuring efficient vehicle utilisation and maintaining excellent service levels for customers.
They are seeking a Transport Planner with container logistics experience to support the day-to-day transport operation, planning container movements while ensuring compliance and operational efficiency.
The Candidate
- Previous transport planning experience within container haulage is highly desirable
- Experience planning container movements to/from UK ports
- Experience using TOPS transport management system
- Experience using Navis VBS (Vehicle Booking System)
- Experience planning workloads for 20+ articulated vehicles
- Experience working within a busy transport office environment
- A dynamic approach to solving resource and planning challenges
- Strong IT literacy
- A solid understanding of container transport operations, port procedures, and VBS bookings
- Good geographic knowledge of UK road networks and port locations
- A proactive approach to professional development
- An excellent team player able to work independently and make decisions
- Strong communication skills
- A positive attitude toward customer service and continuous improvement
- Ability to question, challenge, and improve existing processes
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate container collections and deliveries to and from UK ports
- Manage port bookings via Navis VBS and other port systems
- Utilise TOPS to plan vehicle routes and maximise fleet efficiency
- Monitor driver routes and schedules to ensure optimal utilisation
- Keep customers informed of delays, issues, or failed collections/deliveries
- Act as the key communication link between drivers, ports, and customers
- Supervise and manage driver workloads
- Ensure driver activities comply with Working Time Directive and driver hours regulations
- Allocate jobs and issue instructions to drivers
- Respond to operational challenges and changes to daily schedules
- Liaise with drivers and colleagues to ensure timely container movements
- Pre-brief and debrief drivers on daily tasks
- Troubleshoot transport-related issues in a live operational environment
- Maintain clear communication across the team regarding fleet availability and operational updates
